Hillside Slide

Frank Harmon Architect: Hillside Slim

The slender, two-story cabin rests on a pair of stone walls that tuck into the hillside as naturally as a rock outcropping. The bedrooms and baths are located at the front of house near the approaching road. A wooden bridge leads to the main entrance. Beyond the more enclosed portion of the cabin, the kitchen opens into the living area, which appears to float in the trees. This double-height space includes both a glass-enclosed space and a screened porch that project out into the trees and Ozark landscape. A central stair directly beneath a large skylight descends through the center of the cabin to ground-level access to the outdoors. The skylight brings natural daylight into the core of the cabin and the broad, metal roof reflects heat in the summer and its deep overhangs shade the interior from the high summer sun. Careful window placement provides natural cross-ventilation throughout the interior.
