The CompounD: Phase 1

As mountain streams have carved their way through the Ozark plateau for centuries, generations of a single family will etch their lives into this get-away retreat as they add on to “The Compound,” a cabin intentionally designed to grow and change over the years. Positioned around a protected specimen tree on the ridge of a hill, “The Compound” begins its life as a long, low-lying structure beneath a strong, central roof that follows the visual line of the ridge. Raised on low supports just above the ground, it appears to be both imbedded in and hovering above the site. A sweeping screened-in porch anchored by two massive chimneys – one indoors, one outdoors – comprises the majority of the square footage in this initial phase. Bedrooms, bath and kitchen are tucked behind walls at one end. This could easily change as future generations append their own unique spaces – rooms, porches -- to the original “spine.” Ultimately, the site will allow “The Compound” to expand up to 3000 square feet.
